A Day in the Life of a Puppy: How to Create a Daily Routine

As a new puppy parent, it's important to establish a daily routine for your furry friend. This will not only help them feel secure and comfortable, but it will also make it easier for you to properly care for them.

When we first left our pup with her grandma overnight I created a specific daily schedule with times and amounts of food, so she knew what to do and when. Purchase the below digital schedule on Etsy.

Willa’s Daily Schedule at 3 Months:

Morning:

  • 6:10 AM wake up - try to let her whine for 10 minutes, sometimes she will go back to sleep

  • 6:30 AM Morning walk - typically 30 minutes

  • 7:00 AM breakfast - ½ cup

  • 7:05 AM Playtime - typically 30 minutes

    • Mostly tug of war and fetch. Work on “drop it” when playing fetch.

“Filler Time”

  • Naptime: natural or forced -> close playpen around the crate

  • Playtime

  • Walks and/or potty

    • We go on about 10 walks a day with our little velcro girl

  • Engage in some training sessions, focusing on basic obedience commands like "sit," "stay," and "come."

Afternoon:

  • 12:30 PM lunch - ¾ cup

  • Afternoon walk - 30 - 45 minutes -*bring kibble treats, when she starts to lay down we head back home, if she has lots of energy we keep going

    • Currently working on: “drop it” “leave it” - for unwanted items and “Sit” & “Stay” then “come” when crossing the street

  • “Filler time”

  • Provide some interactive toys or puzzles for your puppy to play with while you're busy.

Evening:

  • 6:30 PM dinner - ½ cup

  • 8PM - take her water dish away for the rest of the night

  • 9PM - last potty for the night

Bedtime:

  • Place your puppy in their crate or designated sleeping area for the night.

I’ve created a digital Daily Schedule, available for purchase on my Etsy profile.

By sticking to a consistent daily routine, you can help your puppy adjust to their new environment and learn important skills. Remember to also make time for plenty of love, attention, and positive reinforcement to help your puppy thrive.
