Maximizing Your Vizsla's Happiness: The Importance of Daily Exercise

Are you a proud Vizsla parent, or perhaps you're considering bringing one of these energetic, loyal, and lovable dogs into your life? If so, this blog post is a must-read. We'll dive into the crucial topic of daily exercise for Vizslas and explore how it can make a world of difference in your pup's behaviour and overall well-being.

Why Exercise Matters for Vizslas

As a Vizsla parent, you may have heard or experienced the challenges that can come with these spirited pups. They're notorious for being full of energy and enthusiasm, but that energy can lead to less desirable behaviours like destructive chewing, digging, and general restlessness.

Here's the catch: these behaviours often result from unspent energy. Vizslas are, in fact, exceptionally sleepy pups when they've had the opportunity to run, play, and explore. And this is where the misconception comes in - some believe that merely having a house with a backyard is sufficient to keep your Vizsla content. But it's not that simple.

The Backyard Fallacy

Let's debunk the backyard fallacy right away. Just having a yard, no matter how spacious, doesn't automatically equate to a well-exercised Vizsla. We've had folks reach out to us who do live in houses with backyards and are still experiencing issues with their Vizlas. Why? After hearing their stories, it often becomes clear that their pups aren't getting enough physical activity.

Vizslas thrive on vigorous exercise, not just running around the backyard. The truth is, that letting them loose in the backyard as their primary form of exercise won't cut it. To keep them well-behaved and content at home, you must provide opportunities for them to burn that energy in a more active way.

A Walk with Willa: Less Time, More Impact

In our recent YouTube video, we took you on a short walk with our Vizsla, Willa. This walk lasted less than 20 minutes, but it was intense. We ran Willa hard, played with sticks, and threw her Chuckit. Why? Because Vizslas need that full sprint to get them to that blissful, snoozy state at home that we all love to cuddle with.

If your Vizsla is causing chaos in your home or turning your backyard into a construction zone with craters everywhere, it's their way of letting out that pent-up energy.

Everyday Exercise is the Key

The takeaway here is that your Vizsla needs daily exercise, and not just in your backyard. Taking them to a big field, tennis courts, or hiking is essential for their well-being. You have to provide them with opportunities to burn that energy, or else they will find their own ways to do it, which usually involves wrecking things.

Now, you might watch our daily walking routine video on YouTube and think, "My Vizsla doesn't need that much exercise." That's absolutely fine. Every Vizsla is unique, and it's all about finding the right balance for your specific circumstances.

Remember, I work from home, which makes it easier for me to take Willa out a few extra times a day. Your lifestyle and daily routine may differ, but the core message remains the same: your pup needs to run every day.

Striving for Transparency

And I just want to say I know a lot of you read these blogs as research before you get a Vizsla or while you’re having difficulty with one. We did a ton of research before getting Willa, and yet there are good days and bad. Because in the world of social media, you typically see all the good stuff - happy Willa, us cuddling, and our adventures. But, let's keep it real; we have tough days too.

There are weeks when Willa has to stay on a leash because she isn't responding to recall as well as she usually does. Having a Vizsla has been a unique challenge compared to the other dogs we've had. I want to be transparent with y'all about that.

But here's the silver lining. If you can give them that crucial daily dose of physical activity, I promise it makes things better. We're not perfect, and neither is Willa. So, as I often emphasize, patience is a skill I'm constantly working on. I need to remember what she was bred for and what I need to do as her owner to make her better, so that she can, in turn, make my life better. It's a two-way relationship.

Remember, as a Vizsla parent, you'll have your ups and downs, but with dedication, love, and daily exercise, you can create a harmonious and fulfilling life with your furry friend. Keep at it, and you'll both reap the rewards of this incredible bond. 🐾

Conclusion: A Happy, Well-Behaved Vizsla

To sum it up, if you're a Vizsla parent or thinking about becoming one, remember that daily exercise is the key to having a happy, well-behaved pup. It doesn't require a massive time commitment, but it's essential for your Vizsla's mental and physical health.

So, get those paws moving, and you'll have a content, well-behaved Vizsla in no time. To stay updated on more tips, tricks, and adventures with Willa and us, don't forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel!
